Puncher Football, Friday, August 31, 2007: This was a really fun game to watch with few mistakes, especially for a first game of the season. Both teams had very good defense and were tough to score against, although it didn't look that way in the beginning.
In the first quarter, the Panthers ran 79 yards for a touchdown on their first possession and kicked the extra point. The Punchers turned right around and Nick Mackie ran 75 yards to score. The extra point failed, so the score was 7-6, which stayed that way until most of the way through the 3rd, when Cokeville scored again after recovering a fumble deep in Puncher territory. The extra point failed, so the score was 13-6. With just 34 seconds left, Drew Guenthner ran in for a touchdown, tying the game. Quarterback Gary Phillips threw a pass to Drew for two points and the Punchers went ahead 14-13. Nick Mackie intercepted a Panther pass to finish the game.
Coach Eskelsen's Comments: Very exciting game with a great ending. I thought Big Piney played well for a first game. We had only one turnover and two small penalties, so that was good considering it was the first game against a strong team.
Defensively, I thought the Punchers played very well with the exception of Cokeville’s first play from scrimmage, an 80-yard run. After that, Cokeville could only gain about 100 yards for the rest of the contest. Taylor Moceika, Ben Howard and Chase Raza all registered eight tackles with two of Moceika’s for loss of yards. Nick Mackie ended any Cokeville thoughts of winning with an interception near the end of the day.
Offensively, the Punchers stumbled a little with their execution and some blocking problems but those should be easily overcome. Drew Guenthner carried the ball 19 times for around 70 yards. Nick Mackie had 78 yards almost all on his 75 yd run. Gary Phillips passed the ball well hitting 7 of 11 for 60 yards. That was a big question mark coming into the game and it appears that we will be able to move the ball via the air as well as on the ground. A nice win to start the season. Next week we play at Rocky Mountain, a 2:00 Friday game.
