Chicken Creek prescribed burn scheduled to begin
September 24, 2009
Weather permitting, the Bridger-Teton National Forest will ignite the Chicken Creek prescribed burn in the Big Sandy area, southeast of Pinedale, Wyoming, this week. The goal is to burn 1,350 acres to improve aspen stands and promote better grasses and better habitat for elk and deer throughout the lower Big Sandy area. The burn is being done in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
Engines, hand crews, and possibly a helicopter from the Teton Interagency Fire Management organization will be utilized to conduct the burn. Actual ignition date will be dependent on meeting strict parameters for weather and fire behavior conditions. Forest users may experience temporary smoky conditions in the vicinity of these fires, and camping will not be allowed in the burn areas while the projects are being implemented. Interagency fire managers will attempt to minimize any adverse impacts to recreationists and residents as the burns proceed.
For public safety, a short duration area closure will be in effect during the burn.
