Game and Fish offers Summer Youth Camp Aug 1-6

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is offering a summer youth camp Aug.1-6 where teenagers can enjoy a week of shooting sports, learn new fishing skills; participate in canoeing, hiking, and rapelling and take part in campfire and conservation education programs.
The camp is available to youth age 14-17 and is held at the Whiskey Mountain Wildlife Conservation Camp located near Trail Lake, ten miles southeast of Dubois.
Hunter education coordinator Jim Dawson said the camp is a great bargain and a lot of fun.
"The camp is free," Dawson said. "Young men and women enjoy a week of learning outdoor skills, and conservation ethics. They also participate in hands-on activities like shooting sports, fishing skills, hiking, canoeing and campfire time."
The camp takes place in some of Wyoming’s most beautiful; country. "Students won’t find a camp like this anywhere in Wyoming and they get it for no charge," Dawson said.
Dawson said the camp is balanced with outdoor, indoor, and hands-on activities. Most of the activities are done in groups with some opportunity to work alone.
"Campers work as a team all week," says Dawson. "Campers make new friends and learn outdoor skills that will stay with them for a lifetime."
To be eligible, students must live in Wyoming and be recommended by a teacher or youth leader. Most equipment is provided. Each camper is required to provide personal gear, including sleeping bag, hiking boots, rain gear, and cool-weather clothing.
According to Dawson, the camp application process is very competitive and the forty openings fill fast.
The Game and Fish will accept applications through 5 p.m. on May 28. Application forms are available at any regional office of the Game and Fish, at the department Web site http://gf.state.wy.us, or by calling the Game and Fish education section office at (307) 777-4538.
