LARAMIE - In response to numerous requests from the public, the University of Wyoming has made available the video recording of former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s Oct. 14 speech at UW’s Arena-Auditorium. People can view the video on UW’s website, www.uwyo.edu, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The video is being posted primarily because a malfunction in the amplification system at the Arena-Auditorium shortly before Gorbachev’s speech made it difficult for some people to hear him, in spite of the efforts of UW sound crews.
About 30 minutes before Gorbachev's speech, crews setting up for the event were testing the Arena-Auditorium sound system when the amplifier in the upper portion of the arena broke down. UW sound crews scrambled to set up a sound system to allow the event to continue, but it wasn't strong enough to serve the entire crowd of nearly 7,000. Some of those in the far west section and the upper part of the audience had difficulty hearing the speech.
"The university apologizes to those who weren't able to hear Gorbachev's translator due to the equipment breakdown," says Chad Baldwin, UW director of Institutional Communications. "We were gratified by the large turnout, and fortunately the vast majority of those in the audience were able to hear and enjoy the event."
