La Barge North road work job delayed due to federal funding uncertainty
by Wyoming Department of Transportation
March 15, 2015
With the future of federal funding for transportation still being debated in Washington D.C., the Wyoming Department of Transportation is taking precautions to insure payment of current contracts. Short-term highway funding extensions by Congress have created complications for road construction planning. In order to accommodate this period of financial uncertainty, WYDOT is moving bid letting for certain projects further back.
The La Barge North job was scheduled for letting in March, but has now been moved to the bid letting in September later this year. The job consists of about 6 miles of widening and pavement overlay on US 189 North of La Barge from milepost 85 to 91. The job is estimated to cost about 7.2 million dollars.
This project was initially scheduled for letting this March and work was planned to begin this summer. However, with the current rescheduling, the bulk of the work will likely begin in 2016.
"We understand the importance of the work planned on this section of US 189 and we want to get it started as soon as possible. However we have to be fiscally responsible in how we manage the letting of all our projects. It would be devastating to lose funding in the middle of construction when the roadway is torn up and the work isn't finished. It's better to delay the project by one construction season and be sure that the work gets done in a timely, quality manner," Resident Engineer Jennifer Hoffman said.
More information about the bid letting schedule can be found on WYDOT's Web site at www.dot.state.wy.us under he Business with WYDOT tab.
WYDOT would like to remind drivers to slow down in work zones, be alert and cautious of roadside workers.
