SCSD#1 school buses now have drive-by cameras
Takes photos of vehicles that fail to stop for flashing yellow & red lights

School buses are part of our everyday lives as they travel our highways transporting students to and from schools. Over the past twelve months drive by cameras have been installed on all Sublette County School District #1 buses. The drive by cameras record video from the time the bus activates its flashing yellow lights until the flashing red lights are turned off. This provides video of any drivers that do not stop for our buses when their red flashing lights are flashing and will assist the Transportation Department in reporting such incidents to law enforcement for prosecution. The safety of our students while loading / unloading our buses was the deciding factor when installing these cameras.
State law requires every driver to stop when meeting or overtaking, from either direction, a stopped school bus with flashing red lights. The driver shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights are no longer activated. When meeting a school bus with activated flashing red lights you may pass, only if there is a physical barrier or separate roadways between your vehicle and the school bus.
If a person does pass a school bus with flashing red lights, they face a fine of $420. If caught again within one year, they may have to make a mandatory appearance in court and face a penalty up to $1000.
