Wolf Depredation Dispute Continues
by Cat Urbigkit, Pinedale Online!
February 18, 2016

The Union-Bulletin reports that a group of University of Washington researchers have published a paper indicating that killing wolves reduces livestock losses – the opposite of an earlier study published by another group University of Washington researchers that alleged killing wolves actually increases livestock attacks.

Wolf Watch posted the original study, known as the Wielgus paper, along with a review of why we thought it was nonsense, back in December 2014, and links to these pieces are included below, as well as links to the Union-Bulletin article and the new paper refuting the Wielgus paper.

But Wielgus isn't ready to concede to a paper with a differring result from his. In the reader comments section linked to the new paper, Wielgus continues to defend his paper, suggesting, "The authors piled on layers and layers of statistical mumbo-jumbo and jiggery-pokery to try to explain their results, get published, and perhaps slay a well-known carnivore population specialist – but the bottom line is that this paper is biological nonsense." Read his complete comments in the links below.
